The incident occurred on February 3, 2025, when Cox, along with fellow American hunter Mr. Trappe Mini Rudolf Francis, a Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) ranger, and a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officer, engaged in a scheduled sport hunting activity. According to reports, the group encountered a herd of five buffaloes, one of which was shot and retreated into a thicket. Upon being tracked, the wounded buffalo charged at the group, killing Cox and seriously injuring Francis before it was neutralized.

Emergency evacuation procedures were swiftly initiated, with the victims transported to the Kidepo National Park airstrip for medical evacuation to Kampala. However, Cox succumbed to his injuries before the rescue aircraft could arrive. Francis was successfully airlifted to Kampala, where he is receiving treatment.

Local authorities, including the police in Karenga, have launched an investigation into the incident, while Cox’s remains have been taken to Mulago Hospital City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination. UWA expressed its condolences to the bereaved family and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safety in wildlife activities.

KCWA is a designated conservation area located outside Kidepo Valley National Park in Karenga District. It is managed by local communities, Karenga District Local Government, and Uganda Wildlife Safaris which has a sport hunting concession with UWA. The area serves as a vital buffer zone for wildlife dispersal and sustainable utilization. It supports diverse wildlife species, including buffaloes, antelopes, elephants, and cats, and provides opportunities for regulated activities such as sport hunting and ecotourism.
