Brussels Airlines Expands Sub-Saharan Africa Network with Record Capacity for Summer 2025

Brussels Airlines has announced a historic expansion of its long-haul network for summer 2025, significantly increasing its capacity to sub-Saharan Africa. The Belgian carrier will operate 56 weekly flights to the region, representing a 10% growth compared to summer 2024, thanks to the addition of its 11th long-haul aircraft set to join the fleet in June 2025.

This growth will enhance connectivity to key African destinations. Nairobi (Kenya) and Accra (Ghana) will now benefit from daily flights, providing more convenience for travelers. Additionally, Banjul (Gambia), Freetown (Sierra Leone), and Conakry (Guinea) will see an increase in flight frequencies, while routes to Dakar (Senegal) and Abidjan (Ivory Coast) will feature more direct flights, reducing the need for triangular connections.

A major highlight of this expansion is the launch of daily non-stop flights to Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of the Congo) starting in March 2025. Previously served by five direct flights and two with a stop in Luanda (Angola), Kinshasa will now enjoy non-stop service every day. This change promises enhanced passenger comfort, greater operational efficiency, and improved sustainability.

Kinshasa is without a doubt our flagship route. The history of aviation in Belgium began almost 100 years ago with the ambition of connecting Kinshasa and Brussels via air. Upgrading this route to a daily non-stop connection shows our unwavering commitment to the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” said Dorothea von Boxberg, CEO of Brussels Airlines.

To support this shift, Brussels Airlines will transfer its Luanda operations to Lufthansa Group. From March 25, 2025, Lufthansa will operate three weekly non-stop flights between Luanda and Frankfurt, following Brussels Airlines’ final flight to Angola’s capital. Affected passengers will be rebooked on Lufthansa’s direct flights, ensuring seamless connectivity.

In addition to its African network, Brussels Airlines continues to operate long-haul flights to New York (JFK) and Washington DC (IAD). Looking ahead, the airline plans to expand its long-haul fleet to 13 aircraft by 2027 and introduce a refreshed cabin interior featuring new Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy Class designs to elevate the travel experience.

This ambitious expansion highlights Brussels Airlines’ dedication to reinforcing its presence in sub-Saharan Africa while enhancing connectivity, passenger comfort, and sustainability across its global network.
