Uganda Declared Ebola-Free: A Milestone for Public Health and Safe Travel
Uganda has successfully discharged eight recovered Sudan virus disease patients after two consecutive negative tests. Following an earlier medical intervention, these individuals had been treated in Kampala and Mbale.
With 216 contacts still under monitoring, Uganda’s Ministry of Health, supported by WHO, continues efforts to curb the outbreak. Since its declaration on January 30, 2025, authorities have strengthened early detection, clinical care, infection prevention, and community engagement.
WHO has deployed 47 emergency experts, supplied medical equipment, and helped establish an 84-bed isolation unit at Mulago National Hospital. Efforts include launching a vaccination trial and advancing research into therapeutics.
Public awareness remains crucial, with WHO countering misinformation and promoting early healthcare-seeking behavior. Local leaders and health workers play key roles, while survivor clinics ensure continued medical support for recovered patients.
Understanding Sudan Virus Disease
Sudan virus disease is a severe illness with case fatality rates between 41% and 100%. While no approved vaccines or treatments exist, early medical intervention improves survival chances.
With strengthened health measures and international support, Uganda remains a safe destination. This achievement showcases the country’s resilience and commitment to public health.
