Uganda’s Aviation Sector Soars With Growth in International Traffic

The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) has reported significant growth in international passenger and cargo air traffic, driven by the launch of new flight routes to destinations like Abuja, Lagos, and Mumbai, alongside the entry of new airlines into Ugandan airspace. This marks a major milestone in the country’s aviation sector, enhancing both trade and tourism opportunities.

Key Points:

  1. Enhanced Connectivity: New flight routes and additional operators have boosted Uganda’s ability to serve international passengers and facilitate trade. UCAA Director General Fred Bamwesigye attributed this success to targeted efforts to expand connectivity and improve infrastructure.
  2. Challenges in Cargo Exports: Despite increased cargo volumes, restrictions on certain Ugandan exports to markets like India continue to pose challenges. Uganda Airlines’ Shakila Rahim Lamar noted that longstanding barriers affect the export potential of products such as ghee, avocados, and pineapples, urging greater diplomatic efforts to resolve these issues.
  3. Commitment to Resolving Trade Barriers: State Minister for Tourism Martin Mugarra Bahinduka and Indian High Commissioner Upender Singh Rawat pledged to strengthen dialogue and work towards removing trade restrictions, unlocking new opportunities for Ugandan exporters.
  4. Upgraded Airport Facilities: The newly completed Modified Terminal Building at Entebbe International Airport, operational since January 10, 2024, provides improved services for passengers, reflecting UCAA’s commitment to enhancing the travel experience.
  5. Technological Progress: UCAA has implemented satellite-based navigation systems to improve safety, efficiency, and airspace management, aligning Uganda with international aviation standards.
  6. Preparation for Major Events: With Uganda set to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Kenya and Tanzania, UCAA is prioritizing aviation infrastructure to accommodate the expected surge in visitors.
